Despite grabbing a 4-0 lead in the top of the first, the Martinsville Mustangs couldn’t overcome five infield errors in an 8-5 loss to the High Point-Thomasville HiToms on Sunday afternoon at Finch Field.

The Mustangs (11-7-1, 4-7 CPL) used a passed ball and a three-run homer by Jack Elliott (Mercyhurst) in the first to take an early advantage.

Right-hander Will Davis (Ferrum) made his second start of the regular season on the mound for Martinsville. Only two of the six runs Davis allowed were earned in three innings.

After cutting the lead in half in the home half of the first, the HiToms (14-5, 5-5 CPL) scored four more times in the third to take their first lead 6-4.

Righty Kevin Heinrich (St. Johns River State) tossed four innings of relief, allowing only one unearned run on two hits and striking out five.

Trailing 7-4 in the eighth, first baseman Steve D’Eusanio (Youngstown St) hit his second home run of the summer to right field to get the Mustangs a bit closer, but the HiToms got the run back immediately in the home half to secure an 8-5 victory.

Martinsville returns home to Hooker Field on Monday night for the first of two straight exhibition contests. First pitch on Value Monday against the HPT Locos is scheduled for 7 p.m.
