Right-hander Jose Martinez (Saint Joseph’s) tossed six shutout innings, allowing only two hits and striking out 12 while first baseman Matt Goodheart (Arkansas) reached base five times as the Martinsville Mustangs run-ruled the High Point-Thomasville Locos 12-0 in exhibition play on Monday night at Hooker Field.

The Mustangs (12-7-1, 4-7 CPL) opened the scoring in the first as Christian Easley (UMBC) homered for the third time this season and Steve D’Eusanio (Youngstown St) doubled home another to make it 2-0.

In the third, the Mustangs used an RBI single by Logan Fink (Kennesaw St), an RBI triple from outfielder Will Knight (VMI) and a few Locos throwing errors to score six times and blow the game open 8-0.

Following Martinez’s stellar outing, right-hander Ryan Huffman (VMI) worked one scoreless inning on the mound to preserve the shutout.

Leading 11-0 in the seventh, Goodheart blooped a ball into left field and reached on an error to give the Mustangs a 12-0 run-rule victory in seven innings.

Martinsville returns home on Tuesday night for another non-conference matchup with the Statesville Owls. First pitch from Hooker Field is scheduled for 7 p.m.
