Right-handed starter Jose Martinez (Saint Joseph’s) allowed only three hits, no runs and struck out six in five innings of work as the Martinsville Mustangs powered past the Deep River Muddogs 9-2 in exhibtion play on Tuesday night at Hooker Field.

The Mustangs (3-2, 1-2) opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when outfielder Will Knight (VMI) roped a two-run single to right with the bases loaded to put Martinsville ahead 2-0. Knight reached base four times in the game.

Leading 2-0 in the fourth, the Mustangs loaded the bases again and used a Jimmy Losh (Millersville) walk, a Bo Rusher (Gardner-Webb) RBI groundout, a three-run double to the wall in left-center field by Logan Fink (Kennesaw St) and a Christian Easley (UMBC) bloop single to extend the lead to 8-0.

Righty Hunter Treece (Mercyhurst) tossed three innings and allowed just three hits, one earned run and struck out three before Ryan Huffman (VMI) retired all three hitters he faced on the mound in the ninth to secure the victory.

Martinsville will enjoy an off-day Wednesday before returning to CPL action on Thursday night at Hooker Field against the HPT HiToms. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. Click here to purchase your tickets.
