FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MARTINSVILLE, VA – The Martinsville Mustangs and NEXT P.L.A.N. Athletics have announced Connor Akeman as the franchise’s newest General Manager.

Akeman, a Tampa, Florida native, returns to Martinsville after spending nearly five seasons with the Mustangs beginning in 2018.

“The opportunity to return to a community that has welcomed me with such open arms from day one was simply one I could not pass up,” Akeman said. “I want to thank everyone involved with NEXT P.L.A.N. Athletics for entrusting me to lead this organization. With the ongoing improvements to Hooker Field and the great support of our ownership, fans and partners – the potential and growth of the Mustangs organization is limitless.”

Akeman spent the 2018, 2019 and 2020 summers in Martinsville as the play-by-play voice of the Mustangs, while managing social media outlets and maintaining the team website. Akeman was also responsible for writing game recaps, press releases and player features and assisted with day-to-day operational tasks for the team. In 2021, Akeman was promoted to General Manager of the Mustangs.

Most recently, Akeman spent the 2022 season with the Clearwater Threshers, the single A-affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies in Clearwater, Florida, providing play-by-play for 132 games as the team’s radio broadcaster.

“We’re happy to have Connor returning to the Mustang family,” team president Jason Davis said. ‘His hard work and dedication to this franchise makes our jobs that much easier and more enjoyable. He’s truly an integral part of this organization.”

Prior to his position with the Mustangs, Akeman covered the athletic program at the University of South Florida, where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism and Mass Communications in May 2017. He also spent four seasons as a Media Relations assistant covering the Tampa Bay Storm of the Arena Football League.
