Mustangs Announce Jake Marinelli as Head Coach

The Martinsville Mustangs have named Jake Marinelli head coach for the 2020 season. Marinelli, a Cleveland, Ohio native, is currently in his third year at the helm of the Mercyhurst North East baseball program in North East, Pennsylvania.

During a four-year playing career at Mercyhurst, Marinelli helped lead his team to the programs first ever college World Series appearance in his senior campaign in 2015. The Lakers finished with a 40-11 record and were ranked 4th in the country.

Marinelli joined the coaching staff at his alma mater in the fall of 2015, working with catchers and the pitching staff. Following a third consecutive top-10 finish in 2017 with Mercyhurst, Marinelli was named head coach of the nearby Mercyhurst North East Saints in 2018.

“I am extremely excited for this opportunity to be a part of the Martinsville community,” Marinelli said. “Mr. (Greg) Suire has been amazing in the whole process and I am very fortunate to get to work with someone who cares so much about the game and community.”

Under Marinelli’s leadership at MNE in 2019, 20 sophomores graduated and advanced to play at many different levels including USCAA, NCAA DIII, NCAA DII and NCAA DI.

While 2020 will mark his first season in the Coastal Plain League, Marinelli does have coaching experience in the New York Collegiate Baseball League (NYCBL).

“I am looking forward to meeting the guys and providing them with every opportunity to become better men as well as baseball players,” Marinelli added. “I’m excited to have the fans of Martinsville come out to the park and see us compete at a high level, as well as building relationships with them. We are striving to make this a full community effort in finding the success that we are after.”

The Mustangs open the 2020 summer at historic Hooker Field on Sunday, May 24 against the High Point-Thomasville Locos.
