Fueled by a strong outing from right-hander Logan Campbell (Charleston) and a 2-for-4 performance out of infielder Brady Slavens (Arkansas), the Martinsville Mustangs knocked off the High Point-Thomasville HiToms 10-5 on Saturday night at Hooker Field to secure the first Coastal Plain League win of the summer.

Rebounding from a 6-5 extra inning defeat in the series opener on Thursday night and a 12-1 loss on Friday night, the Mustangs (1-2) opened the scoring in the first after a two-run, bases loaded single by Slavens made it 2-0.

Campbell, making his first start of the season, allowed only one run on two hits and struck out six in four innings of work.

Martinsville built a 5-0 lead in the third but HPT cut the deficit to one in the sixth after a three-run homer off the bat of Britt Fuller (Duke). The Mustangs responded however with two runs in the home half of the sixth to extend the lead to 7-4.

Leading 7-4, righty Hunter Townsend (Charleston) worked two scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out four hitters in being credited with the win.

After an RBI groundout by Justin Rodriguez (NC A&T) and a two-run bloop single by Christian Easley (UMBC) extended the lead to 10-4, the Mustangs brought in Paul Wilson (Millersville) to close out the final game of the three-game set.

Wilson allowed allowed three hits and an earned run to help secure Martinsville’s first league victory of the summer.

The Mustangs return to play on Monday, July 6 at 7 p.m. with an exhibition contest against the Bull City Crash at Hooker Field.
