The Martinsville Mustangs dropped game two of a three-game set 4-1 to the Peninsula Pilots on Friday night at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton.

Right-hander Kyle Ruehlman (Gardner-Webb) made his second start of the summer, allowing only one run on five hits and striking out two in three innings of work.

Following an hour-long weather delay in the second inning, the Mustangs (7-4, 2-4 CPL) used a Joe Simone (Gardner-Webb) RBI single in the third to grab a 1-0 lead. The Pilots (7-6, 3-6 CPL) responded immediately however, scratching one across in the bottom half to tie it 1-1.

Tied 1-1 in the fourth and with a runner on third, Peninsula’s Jacob Boone (Princeton) laid down a perfect sac-bunt to give the home team the lead for good 2-1. The Pilots added two insurances runs in the eighth and it would prove to be enough as the Mustangs mustered up only two hits in the contest.

Relievers Josh Greggs (Mercyhurst), Ryan Huffman (VMI) and Paul Wilson (Millersville) all saw action the mound for the Mustangs.

Martinsville and Peninsula face off again on Saturday night at Hooker Field. First pitch of the rubber match is scheduled for 7 p.m.
